About the Civic Trust
The Civic Trust was founded to foster high standards of planning and architecture in towns and cities against the background of bomb-damage and shoddy post-war development.
The Trust still champions the cause of urban Britain by acting to improve the places where people live and work: the everyday 'built environment'.
We work in partnership with a large number of local and national agencies. Broadly speaking, the Trust acts in four ways:-
- By empowering others: supporting with advice, technical assistance and encouragement the national network of nearly 1,000 Civic Societies (which the Trust played a decisive role in setting up) and acting as their national focus. These Societies represent more than 300,000 individual members. We manage Environmental Action Fund grants for a wide range of environmental improvement projects on behalf of DEFRA. The exciting Civic Champions Millennium Awards programme, funded by the Millennium Commission, makes grants to give people from local voluntary groups training in the management skills they need to contribute effectively to local regeneration projects.
- By raising awareness of excellence in development standards, architecture, conservation and Green Space management through the well-known Civic Trust Awards scheme, more recent Heritage Open Days annual promotion (when buildings normally closed to the public open for free) and the Green Flag Awards.
- By demonstrating excellence ourselves. We have our own in-house Civic Trust Regeneration Unit (CTRU), staffed by a team of urban regeneration specialists. The CTRU has pioneered effective regeneration in all sizes of town and city and has tackled the problems of a wide variety of urban and rural communities. By operating as a not-for profit consultancy it can offer impartial advice, undertake research and work with communities who might not otherwise be able to afford such advice.
- By campaigning for changes to national and local policy, and for changes in attitude amongst the wider public, all driven by our quest to improve the quality of life in towns and cities.
