YHACS meets at the Lowther Hotel, Goole

Posted on 4 December 2016 by Peter Cooper

Our Autumn YHACS meeting was held at the Grade II* Lowther Hotel in Goole. We were very pleased to be able to visit Goole as their civic society were the winners of the YHACS/Peter Spawforth award for achievement in 2015.

Members were welcomed by the Mayor of Goole, Councillor Terence Smith, and Margaret Hicks-Clarke, chair of Goole Civic Society. Councillor Smith is, at 19, the youngest mayor in the UK and possibly Europe.

Our other guest speakers were Georgina Petty, chair of the Friends of West Park, Goole and Julie Duckworth the owner, with her husband, of the Lowther Hotel. Mrs Duckworth's presentation explained how they had rescued the hotel over the last eight years. We heard after the meeting that they had won the Best Rescue of a Heritage Site in this year's Heritage Angel Awards.

Kevin Trickett and Helen Kidman gave feedback on the Civic Voice Convention and Peter Cooper drew attention to the fact that next year Conservation Areas will be 50 years old and celebratory activities will be taking place throughout England.

For a full account of the meeting please read the minutes in the publications section.
